A huge thank you to Ben from Muloobinba post hadcore act Daisy Chain for taking part in this edition of SCRATCH THE SURFACE.

1. Hiya, what's your preferred name and pronouns, and whose country do you live on?
Hey there! My name is Ben, my pronouns are he/him and I live on Wurundjeri country.

2. What was the first album that you bought with your own money?
I bought my sister the Sixpence None The Richer single for Christmas when I was 7, but one of the first I owned has gotta be either the Real Slim Shady single, or maybe the Titanic soundtrack. Paired well with my GI-Joes

3. What was the first album or artist that got you in to heavier/more abrasive music?

Like a tonne of us, going down the nu-metal rabbit hole with the usual suspects like Killswitch, Slipknot, SOAD, Linkin Park from hearing it on Rage and playing Warhammer with mates. What made me take notice was just how different it sounded from the last song that would have played, which was probably Sisqo

And then from there finding other bands through comps like Headbangers Ball, State of Affairs, Eulogy and B9. Comps introduced me to Converge, Cursed, Parkway Drive, IKTPQ etc.

4. What artist or album do you think has really helped to shape your approach to song writing?
I'd say a huge one would be Converge, I hated it at first, and then all of a sudden it just clicked and made sense. Dark Horse in particular sounded psycho and still does. Negative & heavy but not macho. Also a big fan of Tragedy as well as Cursed/Burning Love and how Chris Colohan approaches writing those songs. Another one would be Cloud Nothings, I really love the vocal melodies and I find his voice super interesting.

5. What artist or album would you say has most influenced your personal philosophies?
I like reading Jacob Bannon's substack. I like how he writes, thinks etc. Similar to Wes Eisold or Chris Colohan. Or just bands/artists in general that are doing their thing and aren't just speaking for the sake of speaking. I also try not to give that stuff too much weight as I think it can also just lead you to disappointment.

7. Anything else coming up for the band that you'd like to plug?
So far we got Our Sound in Brissy which will be awesome, a tonne of mates and a tonne of bands we are dying to see. Everyone is so lovely. And in April we have a few things cooking that are yet to be finalised.

We got two EP's online on the usual streaming services, with new tunes in the works. And big thanks to Ads from Team Glasses
